Church of Our Lady of Monserrato

Indirizzo: via Monserrato 62 - 07044 Ittiri (SS)

The church of Our Lady of Monserrato is located in the Montesile region, in the village of Ittiri. As for Our Lady of Carmelo, the first evidence of the building can be dated back to the seventeenth century, although it is likely that its first phase of construction occurred earlier. It presents simple elements: a single nave divided into three cross-vaulted aisles supported by four large pointed arches set on pillars. The church was subjected to different renovation works in the more recent period: the main building was lengthened and the facade was recreated in a more advanced position. It shows a bas-relief with the emblem of the Virgin beneath which it is possible to see the date 1904 which probably refers to the period of the enlargement of the structure. The façade and its square bell tower certainly represent the most interesting elements of the building.

Inside the church, it is worth mentioning a large wooden cross coming from the Church of Santa Croce, which no longer exists because it was destroyed during the years of fascism, and a well-made statue of the Madonna and Child. During the seventeenth century, the church housed the penitential brotherhood of Monserrato: the brothers, dressed in the sackcloth, took part in the procession and the evocative rites during Holy Week.
