Dolmen Runara

Indirizzo: Altipiano Runara - 07044 Ittiri (SS)

The plateau of Runara is characterised by the presence of several archaeological monuments of Nuragic (Nuraghes with village) and Pre-nuragic (megalithic burials) ages. Among the latter, it is worth mentioning, for its complexity and for its excellent state of preservation, a dolmen made with large slabs set vertically to the ground and topped by a horizontal slab, now broken, which served as the roof. The vertical plates enclose a rectangular burial chamber. Some investigators suggested that the dolmen was reused during the Nuragic Age and then turned into a giants’ tomb. The dolmen was subjected to the reinforcement of a powerful architectural structure of semi-elliptical shape, built using large blocks of trachyte placed in mostly irregular rows. On the façade of the monument facing east, it is possible to see an apparently semi-circular structure, probably an exedra.
