Abbey of Our Lady of Paulis

 Indirizzo: Sp 15 - 07044 Ittiri (SS)

The Abbey of Our Lady of Paulis (de Padule, in Padulibus or Paludibus) is located on the road which starts from Uri and leads to Ittiri. It belonged to the ancient village of Paulis and was built by Cistercian monks, according to the cistercian romanesque style and on the model of Our Lady of the Court of Sindia, thanks to a bequest by Comita II of Torres in 1205.

During the Giudicati period it was an important abbey in the diocese of Torres inhabited by monks until well into the fourteenth century. After it was abandoned, during the fifteenth century, the complex fell into ruins; however, it continued to be settled by hermits. At the end of the seventeenth century, the monastic complex was turned into a rural church administered by the parish of Uri that, even today, holds jurisdiction.

Currently it is possible to see only a few arches and the remains of walls of the church while there is no trace of the monastery. In recent years, the area has been subject to excavation and restoration works.
